NAWIC Gr Kansas City Chapter 100

When I joined NAWIC in 2004, if you would have said to me that “one day you will be the Chapter President”, I would have laughed and said “I don’t think so -- thanks but no thanks”.  That was the last thing from my mind.  I am a bit introverted and it’s not easy for me to step out of my comfort zone.  But it was with the help of the members that I was able to break out of that shell.   We don’t set anyone up in this organization for failure.  When you take on a commitment to serve on the board or chair a committee, you are not alone.  You have the membership behind you to help and support you.  As part of my acceptance speech last year, I touched on NAWIC’s core values -- BELIEVE, PERSEVERE, and DARE.  And I challenged you to step outside of your comfort zone with the help, support, and encouragement of our members. Over the past year I have seen many of you accept this challenge.  I want to congratulate you all of you for a successful year!  I am proud of what we accomplished this year and I hope you are too.

I would like to point out some of our chapter highlights from this year:

· Dixie Osborn celebrated 45 years  as a member of NAWIC

· Gloria Scrivens celebrated 40 years as a member of NAWIC

· Isha Kassen won the Regional “Rookie of the Year Award”

· Walton Construction won the Regional Safety Award

· Shelley Armato, owner of Marathon Digital Services,

won the Crystal Vision Award at the Chapter and Regional level.

· Chellee Mansfield had a baby girl, Kendall Paige, on Jan 21, 2010

· Adrian Zeiler had a baby boy, Noah Sidney, on March 13, 2010

· Brooke Schnurr had a baby girl, Jorja Ryann, on June 11, 2010

Like most chapters we’ve had our tough times too.  A few of our members lost their jobs and our membership was down about 20% due to the economy.  But our chapter has really pulled together to make this a great year!  Brighter days will come but until then as long as we work together great things will happen.

I would like to thank the officers, directors, committee chairs, and members for your support, dedication, and unwavering determination to accomplish our goals.  It has truly been an honor serving as your President this year and a pleasure working with all of you.

It is hard to believe that this year is coming to an end. But what a great year we had!  There are so many new members getting involved and coming up with new ideas.  It is exciting to see the new direction that our Chapter is heading.  I hope you all had an opportunity to view the new website: www.kcnawic.org. If not, please take a moment to look at it.  Meredyth Melcher, Website Committee Chair, and the Committee Members did an excellent job in putting it all together.  It’s a new look and easy to navigate!  Great things happen when we come together and share a common goal.

Ladies I cannot emphasize enough what a great organization we are involved in.  We have so many resources at our fingertips.  What do you want from your membership?  Do you want to learn leadership skills or enhance your leadership skills? Then volunteer to be on the board or chair or co-chair a committee.  Do you want to enhance your skills in the construction industry?  Then look into the educational opportunities NAWIC has to offer through the National Education Foundation.  If you want to network then come to our monthly membership meetings, and national and regional events. Okay, I touched on some of the business resources now what about personal.  A few months ago, I received an email from a fellow NAWIC member from Colorado.  She and her husband were planning a road trip to St. Louis.  Since they would be traveling through KC and KC is known for their BBQ, she asked if I could recommend a good BBQ restaurant.  How many of us think to utilize NAWIC in this way?  We have a lot of resources within reach, whether it’s for business or pleasure.  It’s time to renew your membership so I hope you all consider the value of your membership. You will get out of

it what you put into it.

I look forward to seeing all of you on September 13th to for the installation of the 2010-2011 Officers and Directors.

A new year will soon begin for our Officers,  Directors, and Committees.  One of the best ways to benefit from your Kansas City NAWIC membership is to serve on a committee.  You will greatly expand not only your social network but will form many great friendships.

Particularly for newer members that haven’t yet taken the step, I promise there is no better way to grow personally than to work side by side with your NAWIC sisters in planning and conducting events.  Remember that the more you participate, the more you’ll get out of your membership. And you will get more bang for your membership “buck”.

Are you a newer member and don’t know many people yet? Recognize faces each month but just can’t remember their name, what they do or who they work for? Join a committee!

You don’t have to chair to serve and there are so many areas you can be involved in. Aren’t sure what committees there are or what they do? Check out The Committees Page or contact any of your Officers, Directors or Committee Chairs shown in the margin of every monthly Plumblines.

I challenge every member of the Great Kansas City Chapter to participate in at least one committee or event over the next year!

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer!  I can’t believe it is August already.  We don’t have much left on our agenda for this year.   We will start off August with a jobsite tour of the Performing Arts Center instead of our regular membership meeting.

Shannon Seipel is making a list of those interested in doing the Habitat Women Build.  It will either be in August or September but more info on the date, time, and location will be sent out in the next couple of weeks.

There are six of us from our chapter heading to Louisville, KY, Sept 1st thru 4th for the NAWIC National Convention.  For those that have not been to convention, I wish I could bottle up the experience and bring it back to share with everyone.  It is such an exciting time – meeting women from all over the country, great speakers, informative seminars, networking, and lots of fun! You walk away with a much better appreciation for NAWIC and what is within our reach.  We will have reports on the convention available to the membership by the end of September.

My year as president is almost over and what a great year it has been!  Thank you, ladies, for all the hard work you did to make this year a success!  As a chapter we should be proud of our accomplishments.
