The program is open to all elementary school children in grades 1-6. The competition involves the construction of various structures with interlocking blocks and three of the following additional items: a small rock, string, foil, or poster board. Local winners advance to Regional competition, and one semi-finalist from each region is entered in the National Program competition. National prizes are awarded to the top three projects. The NAWIC Greater Kansas City Chapter #100 has been hosting the Block Kids Program for more than 14 years. It is a great way for kids to use their imagination and learn more about the construction industry. In conjunction with our Block Kids Design Competition we also hold the following fun and educational activities for the kids to participate in: Trades Fair Kids learn "hands-on" from real construction workers about bricklaying, concrete finishing, plastering, carpentry, tile setting and more! Career Fair Considering a career in construction? Kids and parents have the opportunity to talk with professionals that work in construction and related fields. Tool Talk Do you know how many kinds of hammers there are? You will learn all about the different types of types of tools that are used in construction in this fun and interactive demonstration. Girl Scouts
The Girl Scout Do-it-Yourself Badge Workshop is a program developed by the Kansas City Chapter in 1999. This half-day workshop provides an exciting, interactive way to educate young girls about the fundamentals of construction through a variety of activities including a tool orientation, hands-on demonstrations, blueprint reading, and building a wood project. At the end of day the girls have met all the requirements to earn their Do-It-Yourself badge. Since it inception, have helped more than 400 Kansas-City area girls earn their badge. Our hope is to give the girls a lasting and positive impression of the construction industry by sharing our personal knowledge and experiences with them.
MAGIC Camp![]() MAGIC Camp Slide Show
Magic Summer Camp is designed to offer high school girls the opportunity to learn about the countless avenues of employment for women in the construction industry and to engage them via hands-on training in the basic skills of carpentry, electrical, and welding. This opportunity to perform the challenging tasks of basic construction skills and to experience the exhilaration of successfully performing difficult tasks builds their self-confidence and self-image.
During this one-week day camp the girls will make new friends, learn new talents, and explore career options that they have never considered. Under the watchful eyes of NAWIC members the girls learn about NAWIC scholarship information, meet women role models via tradeswomen team-teaching with high school shop teachers, and are encouraged in each task they perform. http://www.nawic.org/nawic/NAWIC_Media.asp?SnID=661384980
